With less than a month to the PSLE Chinese exam, we have prepared a quick guide to help your child make the most of this critical time and boost his or her chances of success!

1. Master High-Frequency Words

Time Needed: 2-3 hours in total

Why: High-frequency words are essential for language comprehension and success in the PSLE exam. They make up 70% of the exam, so mastering them is critical.

These words also appear frequently in comprehension exercises, so having a strong grasp of them will boost your child’s confidence and enhance their overall comprehension skills.

To build a solid foundation for PSLE success, make sure to prioritize these common words in your revision.

Action: Go through all 600 high-frequency words using the VocabKing link here.

2. Revise Vocab from P4-P6 Textbooks (41 chapters)

Time Needed: 30 minutes a day

Why: Vocabulary from P4-P6 is directly tested in Paper 2 multiple choice questions. These questions are very easy if you can read the sentence, so aim to get full marks for these sections.

Action: Revise 1-2 chapters a day, and tailor your approach based on your proficiency. If you don’t have much issue with vocab, utilize 词语手册 or VocabKing (here) to review the words quickly so you can allocate more time to comprehension and composition. If your vocab isn’t super solid, in addition to using VocabKing, read the textbook aloud as an additional reinforcement.

 3. Model Essay (范文) Analysis and Memorization

Time Needed: 1-2 hours per week

Why: Memorizing idioms, openings, and endings can significantly boost your compo writing scores. Reading aloud and writing down the words helps to commit to memory them better than just silent reading.

Action: Choose one to two model essays weekly. Read them aloud, copy them, and memorize the good idioms and vocabulary.

4. Weekly Original Composition Writing

Time Needed: 1 hour per week

Why: Writing from scratch is essential for improvement, but memorizing entire sentences with idioms can help ensure proper usage. Students may know the rough meaning of an idiom, but they may still use it incorrectly. Memorizing a whole sentence with an idiom can help students learn how to use it correctly in context.

Action: In addition to copying model essays, write one separate composition from scratch each week. Focus on memorizing entire sentences and test yourself using 默写.

5. Daily Comprehension Practice

Time Needed: 30 minutes a day

Why: Comprehension requires practice and as you are reading through the passage, it acts as a form of vocabulary revision.

Action: Complete one extra comprehension passage daily. When you encounter unfamiliar words, check if they are core words of the MOE syllabus and review them (you can do this automatically in VocabKing).
